It has been three years since Liam’s father married Claire. Liam, now 19 and home from college for winter break, refuses to accept her authority. The "uncut" nature of the film is most evident in a six-minute single-shot argument in the kitchen. There are no cuts to hide emotion. When Claire’s voice cracks, it stays. When Liam throws a coffee mug (an unscripted moment kept in the final edit), the shards remain on the floor for the rest of the film.
