The seed of the novel was planted decades ago. Cărtărescu has long been fascinated by the Byzantine and Ottoman intersections of Balkan history—the forgotten empires, the contested territories of the spirit. In numerous interviews, he has spoken of a dream he had as a young man: he was a slave in a galley, chained to an oar, rowing toward the Walls of Constantinople.
